Halloween Coloring Tips

Pick one idea for your next picture. These colors are a starting point—your imagination gets the final say.

A hand coloring a little witch and golden stars on a lavender craft table
Start light. Add a little shadow. Make it yours.
Give pumpkins a sunny side
Choose a side for the light. Keep it golden, shade the opposite side with warm orange, and tuck a little rusty brown into the grooves. Your pumpkin will look rounder without coloring every section differently.
Let little ghosts catch the moonlight
Leave the middle of a ghost light and add a whisper of blue or lavender along one edge. A pale shadow beneath its floating tail helps it stand out while keeping its friendly, airy look.
Build a night sky with room to shine
Try a plum or deep blue sky, leaving space for golden stars and a pale moon. Color lightly around bats before deepening the background, so their wings remain easy to spot.
Put a warm welcome in the windows
Make the windows the warmest part of the house. Leave a small cream-colored highlight, surround it with yellow, and add amber near the frame. Against cool walls, even a tiny window feels bright.

Finished coloring? Keep creating.

A finished page can become something you make, share and keep. Here are three small projects for an afternoon together.

A garland of Halloween friends

Colored pages · string · tape

Cut out a few favorite characters, leaving a little white around the edges. Tape the backs to a length of string, with a hand-width of space between them. Hang your garland on a wall or across a bookshelf.

A little friend for your desk

Colored page · cardstock · glue

Glue a character onto cardstock and cut around it. Fold a second strip of card into a triangle and glue one side to the back. Give your paper friend a name and a place on your desk.

A handmade hello

Colored page · folded paper · pencils

Fold a sheet of paper into a card and glue a small colored picture to the front. Add stars, a border or your own drawing. Write a message inside for someone who would love a Halloween surprise.

Handmade Halloween paper crafts: a pumpkin and ghost garland, a witch on a folded card stand, and a pumpkin greeting card

Ask a grown-up to help with cutting. The best part is making something together.
