How to print coloring pages

A favorite drawing, a fresh sheet of paper, and a little time to make it yours. Here’s how to get from the gallery to the coloring table.

Last updated:

Your first print, at a glance

  1. Open the original drawing
  2. Fit the whole picture to the paper
  3. Print one copy and check it

Save your drawing

Click or tap a drawing in the gallery to open its original file in a new tab. Print that file so you get the picture without the website navigation or thumbnail grid.

If it opens as an image

Right-click on a computer, or touch and hold on a phone, and look for a save option. Open the saved image in an image viewer when you’re ready to print.

If it opens as a PDF

Use the PDF viewer’s download or save control. You can then open the file in a browser or a PDF reader.

Keep the original file rather than a screenshot: screenshots can lose detail. Saving and printing options vary by browser and app.

Set up your first sheet

The preview is your best check. Every outline should fit on the sheet, with a little breathing room around the edges.

SettingWhat to choose
Paper sizeA4 or US Letter — match the paper in your printer.
OrientationPortrait for a tall drawing; landscape for a wide one.
ScaleFit to Page or Scale to Fit. Avoid Fill or Crop if it trims the picture.
Color & qualityBlack and white or grayscale; start with Normal quality.
Sides & copiesSingle-sided, one copy first.

White margins are normal on printers that cannot print to the edge. If a browser adds a date or URL, turn off headers and footers in its print settings.

Print from your device

Open the original file first, then follow the steps for the device you’re using.

Windows, Mac or Chromebook

  1. Open the saved image or PDF in a viewer that supports its format.
  2. Press Ctrl + P on Windows or Chromebook, or Command + P on Mac.
  3. Choose your printer. Switch away from Save as PDF if you want a paper copy.
  4. Set the paper size and scale, check the preview, then print one sheet.

On a Mac, Preview can open saved images and PDFs. A school-managed Chromebook may need a printer configured by school staff.

iPhone or iPad

  1. Open a saved image in Photos or a downloaded file in Files.
  2. In an app that supports printing, tap Share, then Print.
  3. Select your printer, check the preview and copies, then tap Print.

AirPrint needs a compatible printer on the same Wi-Fi network as your device. If Print is missing, try another app that can open the file.

Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the saved file in an app that supports printing.
2. Look for Print in the menu or sharing options.
  3. Choose your printer and check the paper size, preview and copies before printing.

If no printer appears, check the device’s printing settings. You may need a compatible print service or the printer manufacturer’s app.

No printer connected to your phone?

Transfer the original file to a computer, or take it to a library or print shop. Ask for one drawing per sheet, fitted to the paper, with single-sided printing.

Paper & coloring tools

Ordinary printer paper is a good place to start with crayons and colored pencils. Put a spare sheet underneath when using markers, which can bleed through.

  • For heavier paper, check the printer’s supported paper weights and choose the correct paper type before loading it.
  • For wet coloring tools, use paper suited to the medium only if your printer supports it.
  • Let an inkjet print dry, then test a small area before coloring. Drying time and smudging depend on the ink, paper and tool.

Printing for a family or classroom?

Save the drawings in one folder and try a sample with the tools you’ll use. Once it looks right, print the remaining copies and keep a few spare sheets nearby.

Read our Terms of Use for permitted uses.

When a print needs a little help

The edges of the drawing are cut off

Match the paper size to the loaded paper and choose a fit setting instead of fill or crop. Check orientation too; some photo layouts trim images to fill the sheet.

The picture comes out too small

Choose one image per sheet. Increase the scale gradually while keeping the whole outline visible in the preview. Different image and paper proportions can leave extra white space.

The lines are faint or blurry

Use the original file instead of the gallery thumbnail. Try Normal or High quality rather than Draft. If lines remain faint, check ink or toner and follow the printer’s maintenance instructions.

My printer is missing or the job is waiting

Check power, paper and the connection. Look for a printer error or a paused job in the print queue. Check the network for wireless printing, or ask the administrator of a school or office printer.

The file will not open

Save the file again and try an app that supports its format. If the original tab is blank or shows an error, return to the gallery and reopen the drawing.

Need a hand?

If a file will not load or you need help with a drawing, send us its title or link, your device, and what happened. A description of the print preview helps too.
